How to tube with transparency effet
the original tutorial was created by Sussuluz
to achieve the effect of transparency on a tube, several methods exist
This tutorial does not claim to be the best method, it simply offers you one way to proceed
Then, you will find your own settings, your tips...
If you tube, again and again, you will find the best way « for you » ; the method that suits you best
Thanks to Sussuluz for sharing her knowledge, and for her permission to translate her work

(translator’s note : you must have a good knowledge of PSP to follow this tutorial
I work with PSP 12 , but you can use another version
you’ll need to be patient !!)

Use the pencil to follow the steps
left click to grab it

the so-called « transparency » effect can be applied to any image that has a translucent part
the light passes through the object and lets also see what is behind.
you can find this effect in the images of glasses of  all kinds, water pots, veils and curtains,
transparent dresses, wings of insects, windows, etc....

Remember to save your work regularly to avoid « accidents », and having to start all over again.

take this beautiful image that will be our image to tube
the dimensions : 709  *  503 pixels

Réalisation
Step 1
llayers/promote background layer
rename it « tube »

Step 2
layers/new raster layers, add 2 layers
rename them « light background » and « dark background » and  paint them accordingly
I chose pink and dark green
layers/arrange/move down each layer under the « tube »

Step 3
activate the freehand selection tool / point to point / , mode « replace »
circle the image
selections/invert
press the delete key of your keyboard

selections/select none

Step 4
layers/new raster layer, rename it « replacement »
with the dropper tool, choose a basic color in  the foot of the glass (foreground color)
in the materials palette, close the background color

Step 5
activate the ellipse tool

draw an ellipse, then move it slightly to the left, so that it is superimposed on the outline of the foot

layers/convert to raster layer
rename it « base »

Step 6
do the same work with the mouth of the glass, rename the layer « mouth 1 »

in the layers palette, close the visibility of these 2 layers (base and mouth1)

Step 7
in the layers palette, activate the layer « tube »
activate the freehand selection tool / point to point / mode « replace »

all around the image, remove the outside piece by piece

your work looks like this

in the layers palette, you can delete the replacement layer

Step 8
close the visibility of the light background, and check your work by doing a greatest possible zoom in
with the freehand selection tool, erase all the small defects

(translator’s note : for this work, I adjust the feather and the smoothing of the tool to 0)

Step 9
your work looks like this

Step 10
change the settings of the freehand selection tool

you will select separately the different parts of the glass, because transparency is not the same everywhere

Step 11
in the layers palette, open the visibility of the light background
select the foot of the glass

selections/promote selection to layer, rename the layer « foot »

Step 12
in the layers palette, activate the « tube »
press the delete key of your keyboard

Step 13
in the layers palette, activate the layer « foot »
lower the opacity to 70%

selections/select none

Step 14
in the layers palette, activate the layer « tube »
with the freehand tool (don’t change the settings), mode « add » (or press the shift key while working)
select the parts of the image where there is water, and only water (no pearl, no flower)

selections/promote selection to layer, rename the layer « water »
in the layers palette, activate the layer « tube » and press the delete key of your keyboard
activate the layer « water », lower the opacity to 70%
selections/select none

Step 15
Repeat step 14 for the glass portion, rename this layer "glass"

selections/select none

Step 16
again, do the same work for the mouth of the glass
rename this layer « mouth 2 » and lower the opacity to 70%

selections/select none

Step 17
close the visibility of the light background
zoom in as much as possible, and correct small defects
for example the part between the glass and the foot
rename this new layer « glass 2 » (or other name of your choice of course) and set the opacity on 88%

Step 18
add a new layer under the « tube » and rename it « outline »
with the dropper tool, choose a color on the edge of the image
this color must be installed in the materials palette as foreground AND background
activate the pen tool

outline the glass carefully, erasing the small irregularities of your previous work
(Translator's note: personally I close the background color in the materials palette, and I use the « Bezier curves » function to get beautiful and thin curves)

don’t forget to right click regularly and « apply »

Step 19
up to now, the opacity of all layers have been set on 70%
you will now determine the actual and final transparency of each layer
close the light and dark backgrounds
Sussuluz used the following settings for the opacity of the layers, but you will decide if you want to change them
foot : 70% - water : 80% - glass : 54% - mouth 2 : 54% - glass 2 : 88% - tube : 100% - outlines : 100%
( translator’s note : here are my settings
foot : 45% - water : 55% - glass : 40% - mouth 2 : 20% - glass 2 : 50% - tube : 100% - outlines : 85% )

Step 20
open the visibility of the layers « base » and « mouth 1 »
eventually, adjust the location and size of the base and mouth1 (selector tool)
and delete the parts of ellipses that are unnecessary (freehand selection tool)

selections/select none
in the layers palette, close the visibility of the light and dark backgrounds
activate any othe layer
layers/merge/merge visible
open the visibility of the dark background

Step 21
you must now soften the « stitchings », ( i.e. the parts where selections were made)
you will notice that there is a boundary that is visible and unsightly
activate the « soften brush »

apply the brush all over these lines to reduce this defect

Step 22
make sure you din’t forget any « floatie » (tiny pixel floating around the drawing)
selections/select all
with the freehand selection tool, mode « replace », click inside the frame (anywhere)
zoom in as much as possible
erase these floaties if you find any

when you are satisfied, select none

Step 23
delete the light and dark backgrounds
add a new layer for your watermark

save your work as...type PSP
make sure your work is compatible with all versions of PSP

note : this work is to do once and for all in your psp. This setting remains  valid subsequently
