****************
take this image. 680 * 544 pixels

Use the pencil to follow the steps
left click to grab it

Realization
Step 1
layers/promote background layer
rename this layer « tube »

Step 2
add 2 layers under the « tube »
rename htem « light background » and fill it with a light color
and « dark background » and fill it with a dark color
your layers palette looks like this

Step 3
in the layers palette, activate the layer « tube »
activate the freehand selection tool/point to point
draw a line all around the dog

selections/invert - edit/clear/delete
selections/select none

Step 4
close the visibility toggle of hte light background
make sure the « tube » is the active layer
layers/new adjustment layer/brightness-contrast
set the brightness on 70%. - This action will help you to better view your work
lightening the dark areas

Step 5
you have created a brightness and contrast layer above the « tube »
but when you have finished teh clipping work, this layer will be deleted
in the layers palette, activate the layer « tube »
layers/duplicate - rename this layer « auxiliary »
layers/merge/merge down
in the layers palette, close the visibility toggle of this layer
in the layers palette, make sure the « tube » is the active layer
your layers palette looks like this

activate the freehand selection tool/point to point

clip the image bit by bit, don’t forget to save your work regularly

Step 6
do the work all around the dog
draw the selection line under the fringe of the hair
as shown on the screenshot

Step 7
in the layers palette, activate the layer « brightness and contrast »
delete this layer
the dog looks like this... a bit shorn, poor thing !!!....

Step 8

select the top of the head with the freehand tool

Step 9
selections/promote seletion to layer
rename this layer « head »
selections/select none

your layers palette looks like this

Step 10
in the layers palette, open the visibility toggle of the « auxiliary » layer
it will help you to redraw the dog’s hair as faithfully as possible
(note of the translator : I set the blend mode of this layer on « luminance (legacy)
to better see what I do. You will have to find your own settings)
activate the Smudge tool with the following settings

in the layers palette, make sure the « tube » is the active layer
stretch the edges of your tube to redraw the hairs as they are on the tube
(in other words, you're going to "pulling hair" of our Doggie...)

Step 11
in the layers palette, close the visibility toggle of the « auxiliary » layer to see the result
If you notice some flaws, or if you find that the tips of the hairs are too thick,
refine your work by using the smudge tool with the following settings

(note of the translator : I sometimes decrease the size to 2, or even 1)

Step 12
When you are satisfied with your work, you're going to clip the ears

proceed in the same way as for the head
activate the « tube » and select the ears
selections/promote selection to layer, and rename this layer « ears »
selections/select none
open the visibility of the « auxiliary » layer and stretch the borders to redraw the hair
using the smudge tool with the settings of step 10
close the visibility of the auxiliary layer, check your work
and enhance the result with the smudge tool set as in step 11

Step 13
you use the same procedure to reconstruct all the dog's coat
think to change the settings of the smudge tool according to the areas your are redrawing
for the back for example

or for the paws (on the side)

the paws (front)

your « tube » and your layers palette look like this
When you have finished "styling" the dog

Step 14
We'll now have to clean « floating » pixels (invisible but very real)
It is absolutely necessary manipulation whenever you use the smudge tool
** in the layers palette, delete the auxiliary layer (now useless)
** close the visibility of the background layers (light and dark)
and open the visibility of the other layers
** activate the « tube » and merge visible
open the visibility of the « dark background »

Step 15
selections/select all
activate the freehand selection tool, mode « replace », and click anywhere in the frame
your « tube » is now completely selected
you will notice that, in the layers palette, it becomes « floating selection »

Step 16
zoom in as much as possible to see the details
activate the freehand selection tool/point to point

enclose the « floaties »

press the delete key of your keyboard

do this work neatly, all around the dog
test your work by repeating step 15
clean the image the closer you can

Don't let any floating pixels escape !

if you find any pixel inside the selection
une the « soften » brush

when you have finished, your work looks like this

Step 17
in the layers palette, delete the 2 background layers
layers/new raster layer, and rename it « watermark »
apply your watermark

Step 18
your tube is finishes
file / save as... type PSP
choose a folder where to keep your tube, and give it a name
make sure your tube can be opened by everyone whatever the version of psp
ask for compatibility with PSP7 (and so, beyond)

note of the translator : this action is to do once and for all in your PSP ;
later, you won't have to worry about it
